There's no doubt about it, Jay loves racing.
Of course he prefers to be in the car but he enjoys the other stuff that goes with it.
Jay Cole Racing has been a low budget team since it's inception 1990 in the bomber division, but the enthusiasm for racing has always been high. Jay & his team take pride in their true sportsmanship and dedication.
Jay is obviously an avid fan of racing..loving the whole atmosphere from wrenching in the shop with the team, preparation, or helping another driver with his or her car. Jay's a real team player even when it isn't his team. You name it, he loves it all! Winning, like with any other driver, is a big part of it, but he doesn't always have to win to keep his head in it.
When he does win, he won't make it sound like it was because he did any great driving or maneuvering, its because his guys put together a great car for him that night. In a post race interview at possibly the biggest win of his career in Cottage Grove, Oregon Jay says: "This is great, my guys gave me great car tonight, all I had to do was drive. That's good stuff! This is a team sport for us and this is what we're all about .. Fun!"
Jay loves and appreciates all the fan support he has, and boy does he have a lot. His pits are always full after the races. The kids are especially fun to Jay, he trades his autograph for theirs. The kids get an autographed photo of OJ, then he hands the the sharpie over to them and they autograph the front wing for him. But it's not always kids autographing, he's got people of all ages showing their support on his car.
Jay was born in Shelton, Washington November 23, 1966 to Drew & Jovita Cole. Jay was the youngest in the family with 3 sisters. He attended Shelton schools and graduated from Shelton High School. From there, Jay went to mechanics school in Arizona then returned to Shelton and bought a home a couple blocks from moms, where the shop just happens to be. It's close and convenient for he and Dexter, Jay's Bassett Hound. Jay is employed as a mechanic by the local electric company, PUD 3. Next to his family, there is no doubt that being owner and driver of the OJ car is Jay's biggest love in life.
Jay has never lacked family support in his racing career. It is a regular thing to see Jay's mom and sisters along with their families at the track giving Jay their full support from the stands.
Many of the race fans have grown to know and appreciate Jay's mom for the support she gives. Jovita will not stay in the stands and watch a race, as Jay comes onto the track, mom is leaving her seat headed out behind the stands because she will not watch him race live. That's why you see Jay's sister JoAnn up high video taping every one of Jay's races, so Jovita can see how he did after she knows he is ok. What parent can't appreciate those feelings!
Jovita is not only a trackside fan, the race shop is at her home and the hauler is also parked in front of her house when it's not on the road. Jay's proud father, Drew, passed away in the stands while watching Jay race in 1998. Jay appreciates his family's presence and support in his life and his racing career.
